I’m always surprised more people don’t know about Diplo, because there’s a good chance you’ve heard his work in the past two years and just never realized who was behind that catchy beat you were bouncing your head to. In the past few years he’s gone from producing M.I.A.’s most popular song Paper Planes, to getting nominated for a Grammy as one half of the duo behind Major Lazer, and still found time to sign the legendary Rusko to his powerhouse label Mad Decent. In all seriousness, Diplo has influenced the electronic music scene more in the past few years than any other individual I can think of. And now he’s coming to Tampa. For a Christmas party. It really is like some sort of gift from the music gods.
Two of my favorites are the remix of a track off his album Florida, and the collaboration he did with Lil Jon for U Don’t Like Me (which was transformed into a phenomenal remix from Datsik).

I’ll stop gushing for a minute to say that his style isn’t anything like the filth you’re used to. No doubt, he’s not afraid to throw down some Borgore or 12th Planet during a set (as he did when I saw him perform as Major Lazer this past summer), but he’ll work in some stuff that defies classification as anything other than straight “booty shakin’ music”.
