It was only a few years ago Caspa was laying down the framework for modern dubstep with a sound I can still only suitably describe as spooky. There’s hints of what we’d now call filth, but the emphasis wasn’t entirely on making the most intense sounds possible as much as producing a solid and smooth melody that effectively tapped into the audiences emotion, with that trademark spookiness being used to increase the tension or darkness being perceived. This is obvious throughout the Dub Police mix. On the other hand there’s the genius display of using that same method to lift up the mood in Acton Dread, in the same vein as Benga’s legendary Night. That sort of diversity in a dubstep artist is unfortunately something you rarely see anymore.
