Mellowstep Sunday

Another week gone by, and another collection smoothed-out vibes to help you stay relaxed before its back to the grind…

Zeds Dead - I don’t know much about Jason Falkner, which I’m certain will offend some hipsters who’ve heard of him before his mother was conceived.

Unsub - This is why I love Unsub, she’s always taking her style in a different direction than the rest of the pack. She puts a whole different vibe on this Skism track, overhauling it into the realm of heady jazz, comparable more to the organic sounds of Sphongle than anything resembling the original. ~ trilla

Same thing with “Snake Eyes”. Those organic textures are just so beautiful and intriguing, its mesmerizing. I want more. ~royce

Skism - Back Off (Unsub Remix)

Unsub - Snake Eyes

ADSUM - Aptly named after one of Saturn’s sixth-largest moon, the Enceladus EP takes you on a spacey and abstract journey through the cosmos. Not your normal mellowstep. This EP is available on Dub Animals.

ADSUM - Enceladus EP

Cyberoptics - Known for his dirtier stuff, Cyberoptics recently posted this deep and melodic mellowstep tune for free download on his soundcloud page.

Cyberoptics - Wall-E

Pop Goes Dubstep Vol. 1

Its hard at times to decide how to feel about Dubstep becoming so popular. Everyone knows that once a genre becomes mainstream that it really starts to get watered down, and the true followers get discouraged by all the wannabes and leaches who claim to be fans of the art. I mean, the main sub-genre of Dubstep is Brostep (worst name ever), named after the fraternity types who helped push it to the forefront. And now we have Skrillex, a screamo rockstar turned Dubstep superhero. Someone I would love to hate on, but is helping expose the genre to large groups of people who may never have come across it. Only time will tell if Dubstep is going to implode under the weight of its own rapid growth, so while we can, lets take a at some of the most recent dub-pop crossovers tracks before they become top 40.

Beatwalker – I’m not a huge fan of the original, but Beatwalker’s remix has become a dirty pleasure of mine. I’m stoked that its a fellow Floridian who made this decent remix of this, and is sharing it for free.
~ royce

LMFAO sings about how fun it is to have fun, and party, and how awesome fun and partying are. And depending on the time of day, they may be in Miami, calling you a bitch. The only parts of this track I liked is when no one was trying to belt out a verse about how everyday they’re “shufflin”, which I suppose is what you do when you’re not gangster enough to hustle but you want to still seem like you could hurt someone…with dance. ~ trilla

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem (Beatwalker Dub Remix)

Adventure Club – Fuck you Adventure Club for making me want to sit through a Britney Spears remix. ~ trilla
lol, so true ~ royce
Britney Spears - Till the World Ends (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix)

Robokop - May God strike down any DJ that drops this tune. I have mad respect for Black Eyed Peas, but their tracks tend to quickly catch on and become repetitive, like an awesome shirt that get’s worn for several weeks straight it loses its edge and becomes mildly annoying. It’s a shame too, because this isn’t a bad remix, but I can’t fucking stand that chorus after hearing it used in every commercial, movie trailer, and TV show for the past several months. ~ trilla
Amen ~ royce

Total Recall – An evocative remix from Total Recall with many ‘ravey’ bleeps, bloops, and echoing female vocals to lend this track a very spacey flair. ~ trilla

It’s fun to listen to, but you wont see this tune in my mix. ~ royce

Bone Loc – Cold Blooded / Safety Dub [TUFF017]

Bone Loc enters the TUFF LOVE arena with some heavy heavy in the form of COLD BLOODED & SAFETY DUB. Both, double time speed breakbeat infused DUBSTEP numbers that slow burn into some seriously hardcore vibes. Unlike the standard method of creating the most distorted gross sound you can possibly make with Massive, Bone Loc brings serious tested and proven Drum n Bass production skills into the Dusbtep field creating dense, hard-hitting and thoroughly complex tracks that aren’t *heavy* just for the sake of it. These bits are TUFF STUFF from a man who know his beats!

And rounding out BONE’s original 2 licks – HI-DEF steps in with a killer remix of Safety Dub that somehow adds even MORE vibez to the mix. Remixing a song as complex as Bone Loc’s original Safety Dub is a daunting task, but Hi Def’s use of glistening synths, stutter edits and huuuge washes of backing atmosphere was the perfect recipe.

This one came out April 11th.

Nero – Guilt EP w/ Official Video

The first Dubstep Tune I every played outside of my studio was Nero’s “This Way”. So its safe to say that this legendary production powerhouse was a big part of the reason I became so involved in the scene. Anyway, we all know to expect big things from this duo, and “Guilt EP” will not disappoint. Featuring the original and a VIP remix of the title track along with a special guest remix by Feed Me, you know this joint is going to be hot. Look for it to drop on MTA Records April 25h.

Nero – Innocence (Feed Me Remix)

Nero - This Way (feat. Vast1)

DJ UMB – LazerDeLicA Mixxtape

Our friend DJ UMB, owner/blogger/Mixer in Chief of Generation Bass brings us a story about a couple who are on a double high, expressed through a highly conceptual and creatively woven blend of dubstep, classic rock, and Hip-Hop. According to DJ UMB, “LazerDeLicA = LaZeRs+Psychedelica+Bass, all the essentials”. It’s an impressive 1st cut live recording on 2 Pioneer CDJ 1000 MKIIs and a DJM 600. Tracklist after the jump.

From Mississippi to Mars Mixtape

What a collaboration; three of my personal favorites Ego Thieves, DJ Hipnotikk, and DJ Nappy, in addition to Rock the Dub and DJ Cable and the rest of the crew collaborate to bring you a mixtape that you’ll love to hate on. The obnoxiousness is mouth-watering, like a bacon wrapped cheesecake deep fried and dipped in chocolate. Check out the bonus ender tune and then cop the whole mix from Hoodlum Music.

Spotlight: Claw of HULK + The Warbound Mix!

I’m told there are those out there who don’t know who HULK is, or why we’re talking to him. To you I say: welcome to the internet! How’s AOL working out for you? To those who ‘know’, HULK is one of the premiere US dubstep artists out there right now, consisting of veterans of the electronic music scene Claw and Richie August. We were lucky enough to snag Claw for an interview to get into the mindset of the man who will be destroying faces this Thursday at our Watts of Wub show…

Dub Pop Weekly Vol. 12

Busy few weeks coming up here. Tomorrow is Tampa’s annual street riot, or what we locals call ‘Gasparilla’. Summary: drunk people, boobs, pirates, beads. Next week 6Blocc and Prolific are coming to town, we interviewed Prolific this week and I’ll just say the man is strongly opinionated about his music. Passion! That’s what we like to see. Right after that is our own collabo with Tuff Love Dubs to bring you the next Floridub.com Presents party, with a ridiculous lineup. You know how most shows, you talk about the headliner? Well, everyone on our roster is headliner caliber, so when you mention one you have to mention them all. The way I see it, we don’t have any openers or closers, we have 5 artists all of which I’ve gladly payed to see headline different events on their own. Hulk is the main attraction though since as far as I know this is his first appearance in Tampa, and I am assured he will be “bringing it”.

A classy remix from KickShifta that doesn’t overpower the vocals. With several mainstream artists set to jump on the bandwagon this year, this is like a glimpse into the future of one sub-genre of dubstep that’s set to get a lot of lovin’.

Aaliyah - Rock the Boat (KickShifta Dubstep Remix)

I really like M.I.A., her voice sounds incredible paired with any sort of spacey mellow sounds, as MiHKAL demonstrates here. This was part of the Gruntworthy LP that we covered.

M.I.A. - CAPS LOCK (MiHKAL REMiXXX)

Funkiness from High Rankin.

BeateauCue - Disque Oh! (High Rankin remix)

Dub Pop Weekly: Stylishly Late to the Party Edition

Dub Pop Weekly has been MIA for the past few weeks — we’ll just say it was on Christmas vacation — but we’re back with a double dose of pop/hip-hop that’s filthy enough to bear listening to repeatedly with the volume cranked up and the windows all the way down. You know what it is…

Heroic producer, Hulk, goes stands off against Bassment Jaxx in a battle that could not be contained in a comic.

Some people don’t like hip-hop, and that’s totally understandable, but a solid remix should surpasses such bias and be able to stand on its own merits regardless of what it was originally. Munchi demonstrates this by taking

Mysterious duo Heroes+Villains take on Smashmouth.
