Johnathan Davis Knows His Shit!

Dubstep 101 beat me to it. With their new album “The Path of Totality” about to drop on December 8th, Korn is touring with Datsik and Excision, making an appearance in Tampa tonight actually… And yes, it’s sold out already. I was thinking about trying to make my way out there to try and guerrilla my way into an interview but I came across this video today which answered most of my questions. To be honest, I had my doubts, but after listening to the interview it becomes obvious that Davis knows his shit. The way he talks about all the biggest names in the genre confirms that he has been following Dubstep (and dance music in general) for some time now. If anyone gets any video or pictures from the show tonight, please email them to us with a description of your experience.

Spotlight: Prolific + Free Mix

Two Veteran Heavyweights in the underground music scene are bringing their unique take on Dubstep to Florida. Coming off a very successful European tour, and rocking the midwestern leg of their US tour, their journey through Florida promises to be one for the ages. If you’ve heard of 6BLOCC or Prolific before it was probably from their reputation in the DnB or Turntablism scenes, but their legacy goes farther back than Dubstep itself.

6BLOCC aka R.A.W. has been on the cutting edge of the underground music scene for twenty-five years. Stepping up to the wheels of steel in 1985, this man has had a head start on almost every DJ you’ve ever heard – he was already battling local DJs in Los Angeles as modern DJ culture was in its infancy. In 1988 he made his move into the hip hop game and dropped 2 vinyl releases under the name PROJECT X. A few years later, as the sounds of UK Hardcore and Jungle were creeping on the shelves of record stores in L.A., R.A.W. was quick to pick it up and started playing major raves along side Industry legends like DJ Dan. In 1994, with a handful of friends, R.A.W helped fuel the beginnings of the L.A. Jungle scene, where they were throwing parties in the same abandoned train station that Preditor II was filmed. Since then there have been over 3 dozen releases under the names R.A.W and 6BLOCC on several labels world wide.

Emcee/ Turntablist/ Producer/ B-Boy/ Graffiti Artist and all-around badass, Prolific, has worked along side a countless list of stars in both the EDM and HipHop industries. He is sponsored by Rane, Madclout and Urban Dewellar Clothing, he has been featured in television shows on B.E.T and NBC, and he runs the influential label, FOULPLAY RECORDS which has been well known in the DnB world, and is now dropping chart-topping Dubstep hits. Prolific is easily an industry mastermind as well as a musical genius.

Prolific spent some time with Floridub to talk about his success as well as the upcoming Florida tour. Full interview + free mix after the jump!

Spotlight: BARE

When I first came across Bare AKA Sean Rodela late last year via a mix he did for Squitty Bubbler (which you can stream and download below) I must have listened through that mix daily for at least a week. The combination of hip-hop vocals from Biggie, Pharcyde, and Snoop Dogg among others, layered over a very distinguishing rapid machine-gun like wobble, continuous deep bassline, and skillful mixing from high to low intensity and back again, kept me hooked not just on the mix but on the original tracks scattered throughout it. And that’s the thing — in a sea of fresh-faced DJ’s and producers all trying to take a bite at the dubstep apple, Bare has distinguished himself with original productions and solid remixes that hit the sweet spot between being brutally filthy while at the same time being accessible to those who aren’t familiar with the genre.

In preparation for his performance next week at Turbo Tuesdays in St. Pete, Sean put aside some time to speak with us about things, and stuffFull interview + free tracks, mixes, and clips after the jump!

FLD: What artist/song/event drew you into producing dubstep?

BARE: From the get go it was my long time good friend Raoul (6Blocc).
He kept hitting me up telling me “yo u should start making dubstep, I think you would do super well with that”. I eventually did and wow… Look where I’m at now ;)
As far as songs go. Early Bar9 biz is what sealed the deal for me.

6BLOCC

Kickin ass since the mid 80s, 6BLOCC (aka R.A.W) is a veteran of the DMC Circuit, as well as the HipHop and Jungle scene, but in 2006 everything changed when he was turned on to Dubstep.

“The sound spoke to me and said follow me…and I did… I felt like I was ready to change my style and move onto a new sound…dubstep was exactly what I needed at the time. Drum and bass reached a point where I no longer felt like it was me and it was also getting too fast and void of the funk.”

6BLOCC has always been known for his relentless techniques behind the wheels of steel, and is now creating blends of hypnotic textures and warped basslines from the future using Cubase SX3, 6blocc says,

“I decided to use Cubase to give it a different feel than the usual mix-cd and to add my own samples and edits.”

Teamed up with accomplished Emcee/DJ/Producer, Prolific, 6blocc is currently touring the US with a rumored stop through Turbo Tuesdays in St. Pete. When they hit us up about promoting their 2011 tour, Loyalty Amongst Thieves, they shared some of the tunes they are working on. Here are a couple clips from what they sent us, and we are promised some exclusive downloads to hype their show when they come through next month. Stay tuned for details.

Oh,and If you’re wondering where the name 6BLOCC came from:

“I got the name from a Masta Ace song where he says, “the bass I create is heard from six blocks”. BOOM!

Spotlight Exclusive: Alexandre

When I first saw Alexandre perform it took a second to register that what I was hearing was a Creed track. As I looked around, people were very confused… Fubar can bring in a demanding crowd, and I was worried someone’s ego was going to get damaged, or possibly their face. Should I tell the DJ that sort of music isn’t taken to kindly round this here parts? But there was no need to, eventually the track started skipping and twisting and soon a massive wobble was felt by all, and the entire room breathed in relief, they’d been had.

Alexandre just released his Whitechapel EP, which you can purchase on Beatport. Keep your ears locked on this gentleman. And check out the exclusive mix he did for us at the end of this post!

What’s the deal with that Creed intro?

Haha, I should have known I’d get asked about that.  Basically, I have an ever-expanding collection of obnoxious tracks that I like to use as intros when playing live/putting together a mixtape.  It’s not actually a remix, per say, since all of the effects you heard were performed live that night (TurboTuesday woot!) which then led into a Bong-Ra track before finally dropping into my legit opening dubstep track by Phear Phace.  I just get a kick out of making people wonder what the fuck is happening before SMASHING them in the face with some heavy dubstep.  It tickles me.

Spotlight: Torqux

I first came across Jimmy’s work in 2006 when he was releasing Nuskool Breaks with the group Duel Calibre.  I have a copy of their first release “Sever Trauma/ Devil in Flight” on vinyl and I must say, straight out the gates you could tell they pushing the envelope on the Nuskool sound.  It was exactly what I was looking for at the time so I kept a close eye on Duel Calibre, and in 2009 it blew me away when I learned that one of my first favorite Dubstep tunes “Relentless” was produced by the same mastermind behind one of my favorite Nuskool Breaks groups.  In 2010 Torqux teamed up with his cousin and rising Dubstep star, Twist, to release “Hotline EP”, what I consider to be one of the gnarliest Dubstep EPs to ever destroy a dancefloor.  So it goes with out saying (though I will say it anyway) that it is a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to bring to you this exclusive interview with the man himself.

Spotlight: Subpirate, The Man Behind Turbo Tuesdays

Jason Federman AKA Subpirate, has been running the Turbo Tuesday dubstep weekly at FUBAR for the past few months. Not only has it been wildly successful, it’s basically where the dubstep scene in the Tampa Bay area is being forged. We sat him down for an interview, and he hooked us up with a mix.

As the backbone of Turbo Tuesdays, the first and only successful Dubstep weekly in the area you are an innovator at the forefront of the Tampa Bay Dubstep scene. I’ve been to your shows and I must say that I am impressed. What you do for the scene is commendable and you have our respect. When and how did this all get started?

Well turbo Tuesdays started as a open mic night here at Fubar where a few local bedroom DJ’s and other performers that would come out and provide some sort of entertainment for the bar. I saw this not going very well and decided to do something about it. Fresh home from the WMC in Miami I found inspiration for Turbo Tuesday. I never had such a good time at a party as I did that week and wanted to continue the fun. Knowing dubstep was finally going to be the next marketable genre of EDM. I got with Todd Frain the bartender on that Tuesday night and we got it going. Spreading the sounds of the dub and bass to the few that were into it I gave the night a name and with the help of a pile of awesome friends started promoting the night I made friends with a few DJs that were new themselves to the scene but had a good following of friends from the surrounding colleges the night picked up and gained steam. We started booking weekly acts that would bring with them a few new faces each week and from there the word started to spread. and since the inception of Turbo we have had one clear purpose to put the best of the best in the Dubstep world in to the faces of the local masses.
