Dub Pop Weekly Vol. 12

Busy few weeks coming up here. Tomorrow is Tampa’s annual street riot, or what we locals call ‘Gasparilla’. Summary: drunk people, boobs, pirates, beads. Next week 6Blocc and Prolific are coming to town, we interviewed Prolific this week and I’ll just say the man is strongly opinionated about his music. Passion! That’s what we like to see. Right after that is our own collabo with Tuff Love Dubs to bring you the next Floridub.com Presents party, with a ridiculous lineup. You know how most shows, you talk about the headliner? Well, everyone on our roster is headliner caliber, so when you mention one you have to mention them all. The way I see it, we don’t have any openers or closers, we have 5 artists all of which I’ve gladly payed to see headline different events on their own. Hulk is the main attraction though since as far as I know this is his first appearance in Tampa, and I am assured he will be “bringing it”.

A classy remix from KickShifta that doesn’t overpower the vocals. With several mainstream artists set to jump on the bandwagon this year, this is like a glimpse into the future of one sub-genre of dubstep that’s set to get a lot of lovin’.

Aaliyah - Rock the Boat (KickShifta Dubstep Remix)

I really like M.I.A., her voice sounds incredible paired with any sort of spacey mellow sounds, as MiHKAL demonstrates here. This was part of the Gruntworthy LP that we covered.

M.I.A. - CAPS LOCK (MiHKAL REMiXXX)

Funkiness from High Rankin.

BeateauCue - Disque Oh! (High Rankin remix)

Mellowstep Sunday: Robb Himself – Easy Listening Dubstep Mix

This makes me want to be in Miami, poolside. A very nice short but tight mix of some classic dubstep from Benga, Kid Cudi, Skream, and more.

Mellowstep Sunday: Bassick

via Forgotten Hopes

Big tingz, this this week requires bullet-points.

Bassick with what I consider one of the first “brostep lovesong”.

Bassick - Summertime (Me n' My girl)

It’s not the first track I’ve heard using a sample of the intro from Fear and Loathing, but it’s used well, and that’s what matters.

Bassick - High Powered Grass

GruntWorthy – We Are the Future (Free LP)

GruntWorthy is a rapidly growing California hybrid of an organization rocking some very Hacker-esque art. They released this free EP the other day, with contributions by a few artists we’ve been following closely such as Mochipet, Samples, Stephan Jacobs, and MiHKAL.

Mellowstep Sunday Vol. 17: Monday Edition

Aura Music Festival was choice, big ups to DJ Craig Heneveld for being all around awesome, as well as throwing down a sick set at 5am.

Sook utilizes very trance-like themes to create a spacey sound with a subtle yet grungy bassline.

The Trancening - Boot, Dubtek and Droid Sector (Sook Rmx)

Sook - Path of Least Resistance

Normally I wouldn’t bother with posting a track that’s been “audiomarked”, but I can’t ignore the powerful combination of Skream, Benga, and Artwork as Magnetic Man, combined with the deep a soulful vocals of none other than John Legend. Looking forward to this one.

Magnetic Man - Getting Nowhere ft. John Legend

And finally to round things off, some crazy but mellow dub/glitch/blues from Archie Cooper. Reminds me of the intro music for The Sopranos.

Archie Cooper – Drifter (Session 9)

BASSFACE Vol. 6

Prepping to head to the Aura Music Festival tomorrow, should be interesting, hopefully not too cold, most definitely will be crazy. I honest to God read somewhere  earlier this week that “Florida’s weather will be back to normal Friday”. I wanted nothing more than to punch the twat who said that while I scraped the frost off my windshield this morning before work. I’ll settle for releasing my rage by destroying some figurative faces instead of real ones.

Mojo makes some really interesting music in general, I’m partial to his ‘Your Mother Fucked Santa, Merry Christmas’ mix, entirely because of the title. Here we get a bit of hip-hoppiness, blended in with a nice dirty wub.

Mojo - Radiance

Heavy, filthy, obnoxious, dubstep from Wonkap. You got your chainsaws, your modulated vocals, lots and lots of aggressive sounds, drops, the whole 9-yards to make this a must-have for anyone who’s a fan of filth.

Wonkap – Ultimatum

My favorite Bone Thugs n’ Harmony joint, mixed with some Biggie, over a sick dubstep beat? Samples and Stephan Jacobs made my day.

Samples & Stephan Jacobs – Nano Puppy (Stephan’s Bone Thug’s re-edit)

Stylust pulls off some crazy mashups, but this is my favorite so far. Just look at that combo, it shouldn’t work but it does. The best mashups are always like that.

Stylust - Poor Boy Mashup (BASSNECTAR/METALLICA/QUEEN/SHAUN BOOTHE)

Torqux send this wicked remix of Far Too Loud our way, it’s solidly filthy without being overbearing.

Torqux - Bass Association - Far Too Loud (Torqux Refix)

EDIT: Make sure you check out the contest Mochipet is having, he’s looking for cover art for the below track, send him your stuff and if he likes it he’ll make you dinner or a custom dino suit. Hold your WTFs for a moment and read the full details here.

Mochipet - Whomp-A-Sarus Sex (Unfinished)

Mellowstep Sundays Vol. 16

Feel that? Summer is just around the corner, the festival circuit is about to kick into gear starting off with Ultra 2011, and Florida is set to be flush with back to back to back international headliners for the next several months. Good stuff.

I’ve been checking out Celt Islam‘s work for awhile now and he’s managed to consistently keep his production values high and his sounds interesting, and I think you peeps might be ready for an introduction.

Celt Islam - Dervish feat. Inder Goldfinger

Celt Islam & Digikal Roots - RastaMan Dub

Floridub friend and associate Halo Nova has been killing on the scene since his debut at the launch party just a few short months ago. Time flies, and Halo has been making good use of it.

Halo Nova - Pitch Black

We focus primarily on dubstep yes, but I just like this remix from David Heartbreak too much to ignore it. Variety, spice of life, and all that.

Emalkay - When I look at You (David Heartbreak's I love Moombahcore Remix)

Finally, a really nice chill mix from Asa perfect for enjoying the overcast and cool pre-summer afternoons.

Asa - I Made This For You Mix

BASSFACE Vol. 5

I’ve been listening through my music archives this past week and reminiscing about the sounds that got me interested enough in dubstep to start writing and posting about it. Keep your eyes out for some “retro” (in dubstep time that’s 6+ months) oriented posts in the near future.

Mojo takes you for a ride with some incredibly deep bass and a headbang-able wobble that’s energetic without being obnoxious.

Mojo - Radiance

Our Facebook peeps have already been introduced to Stikkman, but this track demands a thorough rinse and a spot on your playlist.

Stikkman - Gardenah

Roksonix is playing in Tampa very soon, and sure to be dropping some of their upcoming original tunes along with some fresh tracks from their Circus Records associates.

Flux Pavilion – Voscillate (Roksonix Remix)

Dub Pop Weekly Vol. 11

Looking forward to this year’s Future Sound of Breaks, I really like the lineup for Ultra as well, but the opinion of most WMC/Ultra “veterans” I’ve talked to is that the surrounding parties are really where it’s at. If you haven’t been to Ultra ever before, by all means check it out, but trust me when I say some of the coolest shit goes down outside of Bicentennial Park. I personally recommend the checking out the annual Mad Decent party for at least a few hours, last year they were hooking people up with free beer and chicken from 10pm till question marks. Do you have any idea how good free beer tastes?

Protohype does some pretty cool “dub hop” remixes, similar to Panty Raid or Pretty Lights, this one takes me back.

Destiny's Child - Say My Name (Protohype Remix)

Far as I know this is the first original from the mysterious duo Heroes + Villains, who’ve been tearing things up with their pop remixes for the past year or so.

Heroes + Villains - Smashmouth feat. FKi

I expect nothing from Wondawulf except the unexpected.

12th Planet & Juakali - Reasons (Doctor P Remix) (Wondawulf Drumstep Boot)

Wundawolf – Too Hot For Drumstep

BASSFACE 2011: A Dubstep Odyssey

Huge tunes from Bare aka Sean Rodela, courtesy of Smash Gordon. Sean has been developing an addictive sound that hits that sweet spot between hip-hop and filth. We’ve been seeing other North American/Canadian dubstep artists such as Datsik, Bassnectar, and Smash Gordon heading down that road for awhile now and my bets are that the next year this type of sound is going to boom even further.

KickShifta is pretty fucking amazing. Seriously, this kid does some really interesting blending of instrumentals, and his mastering abilities have progressed significantly since the last time we posted about him.

KickShifta – Boxxy

Nerd Rage remixes one of my favorite tracks off the new SKisM album into a monster tune that eats babies.
